General: Accra continues national identification drive

Saturday, January 23rd 2010

After long delays, the nationwide registration drive coordinated by the National Identification Authority (NIA) for the issue of national identity cards is finally in full swing in the Greater Accra region. Operations should run until mid-February, after which attention will turn to the central Ashanti region.

Registration is open to all people aged six and over. Those wanting to register must go to their nearest registration centre with a valid form of personal identification such as a baptism certificate, birth certificate, birth weighing card, voter ID card, passport, driver’s licence, sworn affidavit, immigration permit, dual citizenship certificate or naturalisation certificate. Those not in possession of any of the above may be registered on oath. National identity cards will be distributed to people who have registered in due course. Those who are unable to register during the current exercise will be able to do so at special regional registration centres later this year.

The NIA was established in 2003 to implement a computerised registry of all Ghanaians living in the country or abroad and all resident non-Ghanaians and to issue national ID cards. The current registration drive was originally planned for 2008-2009 but had to be postponed due to lack of resources. It is not the same as the national census, which is scheduled to take place later this year.
