City: Accra Millennium City
Friday, January 22nd 2010Accra is to be developed into a Millennium City under the Millennium Cities Initiative (MCI), a programme that aims to assist sub-Saharan cities in their efforts to reduce poverty by the year 2015.
The move was announced by the director of Columbia University’s Earth Institute and United Nations (UN) advisor Dr Jeffrey Sachs, who has been named among the 100 most influential leaders in the world by Time Magazine.
The Millennium City Project is expected to improve access to public services, infrastructure and links to international markets, bringing Accra to international standards. Under the project the UN will provide the resources of experts in the fields of economics, health and social policy to help the city meet targets on water supply, infrastructure, health, education and HIV/AIDS.
It is thought that Ghana will partially fund the city’s development through the exploitation of its oil reserves.
