Politics: Ghana’s census postponed
Saturday, January 9th 2010The 2010 population and housing census will not be held in March as originally planned although it will still take place this year. No alternative date has been given, but the government has ruled out June and July due to the World Cup football tournament in South Africa, for which the Ghanaian national team has qualified, and the seasonal rains.
The head-count will take two weeks and cost an estimated $50 million. The questions will focus on Ghanaians’ housing conditions, employment and economic position. Results will be released after three months.
The last census, in 2000, put the population of Ghana at 18.8 million. This figure is now estimated to be 25 million.
