General: Accra Millennium City Project
Tuesday, December 15th 2009Accra city council has launched the project “A New Accra for a Better Ghana” to tackle some of the challenges facing the capital to reach the Millennium Goals set by the United Nations in 2000 to reduce extreme poverty, hunger and disease by the year 2015.
Initiatives include fresh efforts to clear the roads and pavements of petty traders, the demolition of illegal structures to prevent flooding and the stricter enforcement of by-laws on building and the environment.
The announcement came at the end of a four-day meeting between city council representatives and a delegation from the Earth Institute at Columbia University in New York to discuss developing Ghana’s capital into a Millennium City. The partnership is due to be formalised on 15 January 2010 by the development economist and director of the Earth Institute, Jeffrey Sachs.
Kumasi in central Ghana is already a Millennium City along with Akure and Kaduna in Nigeria, Kisumu in Kenya and Mekelle in Ethiopia among others.
