Energy: Ghana to get wind power project

Tuesday, December 1st 2009

Ghana could get a 80 megawatt wind farm under plans to diversify electricity production in the country.

Currently Ghana generates much of its electricity from two hydroelectric power plants on the Volta river in eastern Ghana. These are Akosombo and Kpong and they have a combined capacity of 1180 MW. A further 550 MW are also produced by the Aboadze thermal power plant (550 MW) in Takoradi, Western Region. However the Volta River Authority (VRA), which generates and supplies electricity in Ghana, recently hinted at a project to create a wind farm at Ada in the Greater Accra region.

The project would put Ghana in league with a small number of other African countries including Egypt, Morocco, Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa, where wind power projects are already in operation or at the planning stage.
