23-27 Aug 2010. The second edition of the international festival and competition dedicated to animated films in Africa takes place under the theme “Sharing our experience” at the Alliance Française and La Maison Française in Accra. The festival is organised by Animation Africa, a Ghana-based organisation working to support and promote the animation industry in Africa. The festival programme includes conferences on the challenges facing the animation industry in west Africa, teaching animation in sub-Saharan Africa and the Anansi Mission, a project to connect the African diaspora to the continent through music, animation, storytelling, art, scriptwriting and other creative activities. There are also screenings of short animated films from Africa, the Caribbean and France starting at 18.30. The festival is preceded from 1-20 Aug by an animation workshop led by Cilia Sawadogo of Concordia University in Canada and Samuel Quartey of Animation Africa in Ghana. The submission deadline for competition entries is 30 July. For information see the festival website. more

23 June-15 August 2010. This exhibition has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of the Accra Cultural Arts Network. It focuses on Accra as a melting pot of many ethnic groups such the gated communities in Trasacco Valley and the Muslim communities in Adabraka. Furthermore, it explores how artists can catch its vital pulse and capture its changes and developments, problems and contradictions. On show is work by the Gahnaian artists Kofi Agorsor, Olanyi Rasheed Akindiya Aka Akirash, Bernard Akoi-Jackson, Kwadwo Ani, G. W. Kofi Dawson, Akwele Suma Glory, Tei Mensah Huagie, Nii Obodai, Jennifer Opare-Ankrah and Larry Otoo. more

On this occasion the instrumental, vocal and drumming ensemble made up of 14 musicians performs its traditional African music repertoire including Amewuga, a fusion of traditional and contemporary sound. 8-30 July 2010. This poster exhibition, entitled Libraries with a Kick, displays 14 works created by the winners of a poster competition organised for schoolchildren from ten sub-Saharan countries including Togo, South Africa and Ghana. The participants were asked to design promotional posters for libraries with an explicit reference to football in view of the FIFA 2010 World Cup, which opens in South Africa on 11 June. The winners will be announced at the opening on 8 July. more

This year’s edition of the annual music fest is dedicated to Women in Music and features among others Bibie, Nana Yaa, Irene Logan, Blakk Rasta, Dzesi Band, Francophone Generation Band, Belinga & the Feeling Brothers. 3-11 June 2010. This film festival pays homage to the environment with a full programme of screenings on this topic. The film line-up includes the documentary Ghana’s Plastic Waste Menace in which a journalist interviews important personalities and investigates the country’s environmental situation with a focus on its city suburbs, which are overwhelmed by plastic waste. Another documentary on the programme is A Long Dry Season, which concentrates on the impact of climate change in Ghana and its challenges. In ten minutes it examines the climate data by Ghana’s Meteorological Agency over the past several decades, with a special focus on rising temperatures and decreasing rainfall. Then there is the ten-minute documentary Electronic Waste, which examines the impact of toxic chemicals such as lead, mercury and brominated flame retardants on the earth. Last but not least the 46-minute award winning movie Banana Split by the Canadian director Ronald Harpelle, shot in Canada, the United States, France and Honduras, explores the history of the cheapest fruit on market and the story of many people involved in banana production and consumption in the developing and industrialised world.
