8 March 2010. The 19th edition of the film festival dedicated to work by students at the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) has the theme “The Art of Filmmaking; whose business?” The programme includes four short films directed by NAFTI students: Haunted by Jesse Ofori Boateng (17 min.); Behind the Wall by Sheila Boafo Agyeman (26 min.); Ashes of our Fathers by Welbeck Ampadu (26 min.); and Old Sins by Kwaku D. Prempeh (26 min.). Opening at 17.30 followed by film screenings from 18.30 onwards. more

18 Feb 2010. This 2009 movie, directed by Loraine Blumentha and Michael Schmitt, tells the story of a female soccer team in Ghana’s Buduburam camp for Liberian refugees. The main protagonist, Luci, was introduced to soccer by her father, Mapi. Following his sudden death Luci decides to leave her homeland and study in Ghana, where she founds a female soccer team named after her father. Mapi brings together players of different ages, such as Felicia and Evelyn, who tell their stories of war and salvation. The movie lasts 45 minutes. Admission is free. more

9-23 Feb 2010. The Nkrumah Centenary Celebration Committee and the W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan African Culture present a series of lectures and roundtable discussions on Black History. The programme looks at the connections between the American civil rights activist William Edward Burghardt Du Bois and independent Ghana’s first president Kwame Nkrumah, Nkrumah’s appointment of Du Bois’ second wife, Shirley Graham, as head of Ghana’s first TV station and Nkrumah and Du Bois’ shared vision for the Encyclopaedia Africana: History and Future Possibilities. All events are free, open to the public and start at 17.30. more

27 Feb 2010. This concert features the multi-talented Ghanaian musician Gyedu-Blay Ambolley, better known as Simigwa Do Man. Ambolley is a singer, songwriter and producer who started his artistic career 25 years ago with a jazzy highlife sound called Simigwa. Since then he has recorded several hit albums, toured around the world and worked with numerous international artists including the late Miriam Makeba from South Africa, Nigeria’s Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Cuba’s Ricardo Estrada, Japan’s Chikuzan Takahashi, the American George Howard, Angela Bofill and Norman Connors. On this occasion Ambolley will play indigenous rhythms from the coastal regions of Ghana together with the Amanfo Band. Together they form a new musical movement called Coastal Vibes. 20 Feb 2010. This concert features the Accra-based Cameroonian vocalist and composer Armand Ntep, whose repertoire ranges from baritone to tenor ballads. His innovative Afro-groove fusion style, which has made him internationally famous, is inspired by the traditional music styles "lihongo", “makossa” and “bikutsi” from his native country as well as by hip-hop, salsa and reggae. 17-27 Feb 2010. This exhibition features the paintings of the Accra-based Togan artist Samuel Tetteh Katchan, who sees the world as a stained-glass window in which colours assume the same meaning as forms, symbols and motifs. His work includes a mural painting in Cape Coast and some religious scenes for the Catholic church of Our Lady of Mercy in Tema. He won the first prize in the Rapid Painting Competition organized the the Spanish embassy in Ghana in 2004 and has shown his work across Africa and in Spain and the United States. more

13 Feb 2010. This concert is performed by Mala Sanfre, a Flamenco street ensemble made up of four Spanish girls, the three sisters Maria, Marta and Pilar Robles and their cousin Pilar Crespo. Mala Sangre has been singing, dancing and playing typical flamenco instruments, such as guitar, cajçon, accordion, bas-guitar and castañuelas, since 1996. Their repertoire foresees a rich programme of Spanish music and Flamenco dance. The concert starts at 20.30. more

9 Feb 2010. This concert is performed by the Hadouk Trio, comprising the saxophonist and flautist Didier Malherbe, Loy Ehrlich and Steve Shehan, who play Oriental, African, Celtic and South American moods. Malherbe, from France, helped found the legendary Gong jazz group, which has worked with Jacques Higelin, Brigitte Fontaine and Robert Wyatt among others. Ehrlich, also from France, is a pioneer of rock jazz as well as one of the artistic co-directors of the Essaouira Festival, which every year reunites the best world and jazz artists. He plays the kora, Moroccan hajouj and keyboards and has worked with musicians such as Youssou N'Dour, Toure Kunda, Geoffrey Oryema and Peter Gabriel. The American Shehan is a percussionist and has recorded several solo albums and played alongside Brian Eno, Herbie Hancock, Paul McCartney and Paul Simon. The concert starts at 20.30. more

30 Jan 2010. This concert is performed by the Senegalese artist Naby, who won the RFI Discovery Prize in 2009. Naby’s music combines different styles including reggae and acoustics and deals with social issues. Naby started his career in 1996 with the group Peace and Peace and his first songs were included in the compilations Sénéran one and two. He has worked with artists such as Didier Awadi and Doug E Tee among others and in 2008 he presented his first solo album, Dem Naa, produced by his record label Demrek. 20-30 Jan 2010. This exhibition brings together the paintings and sculptures of Charway Mawunya David, who experiments with different materials and media. Besides working on canvas, he likes to explore various artistic movements from different periods and discover new styles and genres. David graduated at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and is currently a member of the Foundation for Contemporary Art Ghana (FCA Ghana). He has displayed his work internationally as well as at the second International Conference on African Culture and Development in Accra. more
